Abstract

This book, Conservation of Migratory Waterbirds in Aceh: Science, Threats, and Community Action, presents a comprehensive exploration of the ecological importance of Aceh’s coastal ecosystems within the East Asian–Australasian Flyway, one of the world’s most significant migratory bird routes. The book explains how mudflats, mangroves, sandy beaches, and post-tsunami coastal landscapes in Aceh provide essential habitats for numerous species of migratory waterbirds. Through ecological perspectives and geographical analysis, the authors highlight the role of Aceh as a crucial stopover and wintering ground that supports global biodiversity and reflects the health of coastal ecosystems.

Using field surveys, habitat mapping, and socio-ecological research methods, the book documents the diversity, distribution, and habitat preferences of migratory waterbirds in the region. It also investigates major conservation challenges, including hunting pressures, illegal wildlife trade, habitat degradation, and governance gaps. By combining ecological data with market observations and community-based assessments, the study reveals how human activities influence bird populations and ecosystem stability, while also providing evidence-based insights into the dynamics of threats affecting migratory species along the flyway.

Beyond identifying problems, the book emphasizes community-based conservation as a practical and sustainable strategy for protecting migratory waterbirds. Through awareness campaigns, educational programs, participatory mapping, and local engagement—including the involvement of women and schools—the authors demonstrate how conservation initiatives can shift public perception and encourage collective environmental responsibility. The final chapters present policy recommendations, strategic conservation pathways, and future research directions aimed at strengthening habitat protection, improving regulatory awareness, and integrating Aceh into broader international conservation efforts for migratory waterbirds.
