Abstract

Mathematics Literacy Through Role-Play Games explores a simple yet powerful idea: mathematics becomes meaningful when it is lived, not merely learned. Through role-play, abstract concepts are transformed into dialogue, decisions, and real-world problem solving. Students move beyond calculation toward interpretation, strategy, and reflection.

Mathematical literacy, as emphasized by the Programme for International Student Assessment under the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, is not only about mastering procedures but also about applying mathematics thoughtfully in authentic contexts. Role-play creates these contexts, fostering communication, collaboration, and critical thinking alongside numerical understanding.

Ultimately, this book invites educators to reimagine mathematics classrooms as dynamic spaces where learners actively construct meaning. When students experience mathematics as a tool for navigating life, they gain more than correct answers—they gain confidence, insight, and the capacity to think wisely in a complex world.
