GENRE-BASED TEXT WRITING
Abstract
Genre-Based Text Writing is a comprehensive guide designed to develop learners’ writing competence through a systematic exploration of text genres commonly taught in English language education. The book begins by introducing the fundamental concept of genre-based writing, emphasizing the role of paragraphs as core components of coherent texts, their structures, and key textual features. By providing clear explanations and illustrative examples, this opening chapter establishes a strong theoretical foundation that enables readers to understand how different genres function and how meaning is constructed through organized language.
The middle chapters focus on the practical application of genre-based writing across major text types, including descriptive, narrative, recount, and procedure texts. Each chapter discusses the concept, generic structures, language features, and variations of the respective genre, guiding learners from imagination and personal experience to well-structured written products. Carefully designed exercises accompany each genre to reinforce understanding, encourage creativity, and strengthen students’ ability to apply linguistic features accurately within meaningful contexts.
In the final chapters, the book extends genre-based writing to more advanced and real-world texts, such as journalistic and argumentative writing. Readers are introduced to the structure and language characteristics of news texts as well as persuasive texts that require critical thinking and logical reasoning. Through authentic examples and targeted exercises, Genre-Based Text Writing equips students, pre-service teachers, and educators with practical skills to produce effective, purposeful, and contextually appropriate texts, making it a valuable resource for both classroom instruction and independent learning.
